Abstract

This study was designed to measure educational needs for the prevention and early
det ection of the five major cancers among Korean. The findings of this study could be
used as a framework for the development of an educational program for prevention and
det ection of cancer which are prevalent in Korea.
This descriptive study us ed a self- report survey to gather information about educational
needs related to the prevention and early det ection of cancer . A convenience sample of 187 adults was collected from the family and relatives of university students around T aegu and Kyungpook province from April to June 1998. Questionnair es for this study developed by the res earcher contain the open questions such as ’What do you want to know about the prevention of cancer , stomach cancer , hepatoma, lung cancer , cervical cancer , and breast cancer? ’ and ’What do you want to know about the early detection of cancer , stomach cancer , hepatoma, lung cancer , cervical cancer , and breast cancer? ’ Descriptive st atistics were us ed for dat a analysis.
The r esults were as follows :
The information subjects want ed to know about cancer prevention were: ’What kinds of
food can we eat for cancer prevention? ’ , ’What can we do for cancer pr evention? ’ , and
’Why does cancer happen? ’ The information subjects wanted to know about the early
det ection of cancer were: ’What are the early symptoms and signs of cancer? ’ and ’What
are the best tests and methods for the early detection of cancer ? ’ .
The information subjects wanted to know about stomach cancer prevention were:
’What kinds of food produce the stomach cancer? ’ , ’What can we do for stomach cancer
prevention? ’ and ’Why does stomach cancer happen? ’ . The information subjects wanted
